EcoBathroom: Low-flow Toilet and Showerhead

//EcoBathroom: Low-flow Toilet and Showerhead

Home improvement has been a great leap for homeowners. Inside our houses, the bathroom is much like the kitchen, wherein water is used for everyday activities.

The water consumed by toilet use is approximately 27%, this makes more than the water usage of shower, dishwasher and washing machines. It is best to install or replace your toilet with a low-flow toilet. A low-flow toilet is the best option to start an eco-friendly bathroom.

Newly constructed homes are installed highly efficient low-flow toilets. The modern low-flow toilets provide an adequate flush power while using a small volume of water.

Even if you already installed a low-flow toilet, the water usage can still be reduced, you just have to install a dual-flusher. A dual-flusher gives the function for the toilet to have two buttons, the first button is to flush liquid waste, which involves around 8 gallons of water. The second button is to flush solid waste, which involves 16 gallons of water.

An installation of a new low-flow toilet will cost you not below $20. However, if you cannot afford to buy a new low-flow toilet, there is a technique to fix the problem. Pour a drop of sand or pebble into a 2-liter soda bottle. Place the bottle in the tank, this technique can displace the water. Thus, it will not fill the tank.

However, this technique is just a temporary solution to the problem. Remember that the 2-liter displacement is not near nor equal to 5.5 gallons of water that can be saved per flush with a low-flow toilet.

Every day, we take a shower and there are some people who take long and relaxing showers. To reduce the excessive use of water, showers should be done in a short span of time. However, if you really want to shower long, you have to consider a low=flow showerhead.

Did you know that a normal shower head can use 5 to 8 gallons of water per minute? In a low-flow showerhead, only 2.5 gallons or less is used under the same amount of water pressure.

When low-flow showerheads are installed, you have saved two things—water and energy. Low-flow showerheads only involve a small volume of water when used and the amount of energy to heat the water is reduced. It has been claimed by the manufacturers of low-flow showerheads that a hundred of dollars are saved annually.

You do not have to pay for an expensive installation or upgrade price. Low-flow showerheads can be easily installed, it only needs a wrench, PTFE tape and a little amount of your time.

Moreover, manufacturers have recommended looking for a showerhead with a built-in water filter. These water filters are needed for those who use hard water, it can remove the chlorine, impurities, and chemicals that were mixed. These substances can potentially affect our health, the bacteria spreads through the skin and respiratory system.

When you have already installed a low-flow showerhead, you can upgrade the current system.
